The International Vila de Palamos Optimist Trophy, hosted by the Club Vela Palamos in the beautiful Costa Brava, is the largest dinghy and Optimist regatta in Spain, and second largest Optimist event in the World just behind the Lake Garda Meeting. Each year, 550 Optimist sailors from all over the World fill the registration list to participate in four days of competitive racing in one of the best sailing areas in the Mediterranean Sea.
Palamos is conveniently located about two hours North-East from Barcelona (one of most visited cities to in Europe), and about two hours South-West from the border with France. The town is a very popular attraction for tourist in the Summer for its beaches, fantastic weather, local cuisine and the rich history the town carries. During the event in February, Palamos is in low Season but the town completely opens up for the regatta and it’s dedicated to making the experience for sailors and families unique.
One of the reasons Palamos has become such a popular regatta (sold out every year) is the destination itself. While the sailing conditions offer a wide range of options (from light winds and sunny days to winter winds and big swells), the town is one of the safest venues the sailors will enjoy around the Opti circuit. Restaurants offer a fantastic taste of why Spanish is one of the most appreciated cuisines in the World, while families can visit many cities and attractions close by as Palamos is beautifully located in the region of Catalonia.
Coach Bernat Gali Bou, “Being a Catalonian native, I can honestly say I have sailed and coached in Palamos around 50 times in the last 25 years, and it has been one of my favorite venues since the first time. The venue has a unique location which challenges the sailors and coaches every single day as conditions drastically vary from day to day. Palamos can host regattas year round thanks to a fantastic Organizing Committee, their facilities and a town that can easily host and welcome 550 sailors, families, coaches and officials. Next year will be their 33rd edition and each year grows more and more in popularity, time to test your skills in Spain!”
