Scott Norman is a marine professional and small-business owner based in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Originally from Des Moines, Iowa he first took to sailing when he was just eight years old when he started in his father’s lap on a 25-foot Catalina. From that magical moment as a young boy, he’s always loved sailing and the special memories that are created with it. He’s never looked back since!
Scott got his educational start at the University of South Florida. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Communications. This was foundational for him to kick-start a career as an entrepreneur, instructor, and youth leader. Following this, Scott received his certifications as a US Sailing Level 1 Instructor Trainer and US Sailing Level 3 Coach. On top of this, he trained in Intermediate Marina Management, CPR, First Aid and SafeSport.
One of the biggest milestones of his career is when he founded his own business, Norman Sailing, in 1994. The company offers private and team coaching, consulting services, events, coach training, photography, video production, and boat rentals. Since he first started the company, Scott has provided sailing services for over 100 organizations. Over the years, he has built a reputation for his dedication to Norman Sailing’s clients, his expertise, and professionalism. Norman Sailing has a focus on fostering youth development with a competitive youth sailing program.
In 2018, Scott also took on the position of U.S. Sales Manager at Professional Boats. In this role, he is responsible for managing sales, rentals, and heading the social media accounts.
Throughout his extensive career, Scott has worked in program management, sales, and marketing within the sailing industry. Apart from his two current positions, Scott has had a rich and varied background in the sailing industry. In 2019, Scott was the Waterfront director at the Norfolk Yacht & Country Club. As the director, Scott managed 20 employees and ran the youth and adult programs as well as overseeing the marina management. Before this, in 2017 Scott was the Sailing Director for the Lake Forest Sailing, where he was responsible for overseeing the staff, courses, and the school's harbor and launch basin.
For 23 years (1995 to 2018), Scott was the Executive Director and Head Coach at U.S. Optimist National Team. In this role, he led twenty-five international teams for USODA. On top of this, Scott also worked with Harken Yacht Equipment for thirteen years (2004 to 2017), where he focused on product development and sales. At Harken Yacht Equipment, Scott managed the Southeast aftermarket and was responsible for small boat OEM accounts averaging 42 million in annual sales.
If this wasn’t enough, Scott also worked with Lauderdale Yacht Club for five years (1995 to 2000). He was also the Director of Intercollegiate Sailing and full-time varsity head coach at Eckerd College (2000 to 2005).
Scott has had a varied and full career in the sailing industry and he continues to follow his passion and make sailing accessible to the greater community. When he’s not working, Scott loves to spend time with his wife Meredith and his two beautiful children Everett and Hunter. He enjoys staying active in the great outdoors, playing tennis, running, and skiing! That’s not to mention getting his hands dirty with the occasional boat restoration project.
